October 7th, Feast of Our Lady of The Rosary

The Battle of Lepanto

“No discussion of the history of the Rosary would be complete
without a description of the epic and historic Battle of Lepanto.
While engaged in a protracted war with the Muslim Turks over
the control of Eastern Europe and in particular the Mediterranean,
Pope Pius V organized a fleet of ships to engage the Muslim Turkish
navy. Pope Pius V implored all the faithful to fervently pray
the Rosary and ask our Blessed Mother to intercede on behalf of
the Christians. Despite being hopelessly outnumbered in quantity
of ships and fighting men, the Muslim Turks were defeated at
the Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571.

Pope Pius V declared this day to be the Feast of the Holy
Rosary and asked all to give thanks to “Our Lady of Victory” for
her timely intercession in answer to the faithful’s praying of the
Rosary. This feast remains important in our church to this day,
testifying to the Rosary’s significance in our Church’s history.”
