Scourging--The Flagellation of Christ, by Caravaggio

On “Sorrowful” Tuesdays, we pray at the pillar as Jesus is scourged. ” ‘ What evil has this man done? I found him guilty of no capital crime. Therefore, I shall have him flogged and then release him.'” Luke 23: 23. Pilate’s screaming illogic led him to punish one whom he knew had done no evil. This unnatural and distorted reality reflects the irrationality of our times. We meet violence with more unending violence. We meet distrust with more suspicion. Lord, grant me the wisdom to think not as man thinks but rather to lead a life as a child of God and not as a product of this world.
